Putting the Crisis on the Peninsula into Perspective

lmost ten years after the end of the Cold War was declared, the Asian North-East continues being an area of convergence between the tensions that were characteristic of that historical period. Disposed around the Korean Peninsula, Russia, China and Japan interact there, with the USA constantly interfering in the political and military spheres. The Peninsula continues being divided between two regimes representing the old East-West opposition, regimes that already fought bloodily, in one of the defining episodes of exactly this same Cold War. The unstable strategic balance the actors mentioned above have been living in for half a century rests on the armistice that suspended the Korea War in 1953. A truce that was signed between the USA and North Korea, without the participation of South Korea. In the heart of the persistent instability in the Asian North-East lies the North-Korean regime, in fear of being simply destroyed by the USA, since Washington refuses to go one step beyond the armistice and normalize the relations between the two States. In the last instance, all the brinkmanship the northerners have devoted themselves to, in the last ten years at least, is aimed at bringing the Americans to negotiate a more satisfactory relation between the two countries.
